Pastor Jay Baines
I was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and due to my father’s occupation in the blue jean industry, my family moved several times during my childhood and teen years. I became a follower of Christ at the early age of 5 under the influence of a godly mom and dad, as well as the pastor, Dr. Melvin Worthington, who lead my alcoholic father to Christ. That changed everything in my family.
I was privileged in my early years to sit under great preachers and teachers of the Word of God and the desire to pastor and preach became stronger as the years passed. I surrendered to the will of God for my life at age 15 and preached my first sermon a few months later. I knew I needed to prepare for a life of ministry and decided in July of 1983 to attend Southeastern Free Will Baptist College in Virginia Beach, VA (presently located in Wendell, NC) where I earned my BA in Pastoral Theology/Bible. I later continued my education at Liberty University and received my MAR in 2008. I am currently plan to complete my M.Div. by the end of 2016.
It was at Southeastern College that I met my wife, Annette, and we were married two days after my graduation. We began our ministry together in Indianapolis, IN and have ministered in NC, AL, and spent 21 years in the state of Delaware. We have three children, Jonathan (26), Caleb (22), and Matthew (19). Jonathan is married to Janie and lives in Nashville, TN. Caleb is married to Missy and lives in Smyrna, DE. Missy gave birth to our first grandchild, Kenlee Marie on March 5, 2015 and is expecting a baby boy this November. We love being Papa and Mimi. Our youngest son, Matthew lives at home and is enrolled at Liberty University and will studying Business.
Our Hope for First Church and Greater Richmond
Our hope and prayer for the First Church and the Greater Richmond area is that we will influence our people and this city to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ and Worship our triune God in spirit and in truth. It is our desire to not only influence the local people and culture around us but to have a global impact through various ministries in our Church. We desire to show the love of Jesus Christ to those whom we have been given the privilege to influence by serving and meeting needs as opportunities arise. We invite you to join us on this incredible journey and participate in the greatest ministry on the earth…building the Kingdom of God.
